ServeToMe is a third party application that provides additional functionality to OS X system and enjoys a popularity among Mac users.

Unlike the software developed for Windows system, most of the applications installed in Mac OS X generally can be removed with relative ease.

If the ServeToMe install ultimately does not work, I'll be looking at AMPACHE next on the R/Pi, since I've used that before, and there are also client apps for Ampache for iOS (iAmpache, AmpacheX) and Android (Ampache, Lullabye), and it works well in WebKit as well as Gecko-based browsers. How to Uninstall ServeToMe Application/Software on Your Mac Yes, I know you can install RaspBMC, and other similar things, but I wanted something lighter on the system, since this will be running headless, and other devices to pull the media. Right now, I am loading Debian into VirtualBox to test these instructions, and while I dont have an R/Pi yet, this is my first use for one, and if these instructions give me something that works, I'll order my R/Pi right away.Īlso, if you use the snapshot feature in VirtualBox, you can revert back and UNDO your changes if you mess something up, and start over without having to spend the hour to redo the install of Debian. If you're not familiar with the Terminal, and running commands, and compiling apps from source, the above instructions might put you off, but it's not really a big deal - just follow the instructions.

In the support pages of his site, Matthew Gallagher (the author of the apps StreamToMe and ServeToMe) mentions a Linux version of ServeToMe, created by a 3rd party, and as such offers no support.Ī Google search brouch me to this Google Code project, with the wiki page linked here:

I may get downvotes for this, but unless you are looking at a 37" screen or larger, and from 6-10' from the screen, all the resolution higher than 720p seems like a total waste of bandwidth to me (for playback at least - video CAPTURE/recording is a whole OTHER story). Keeping the resolution low, saves on bandwidth and network congestion and looks fine to my eyes. Maybe it's just me, but I see no difference in 1080p, 720p video when transcoded down to 480p, even on the Retina Display iPad3. So the StreamToMe/ServeToMe is a perfect combo of client and server apps, that happily traverse NAT via UPnP, as well as handle the necessary transcoding etc, and of course I want to move this function OFF my main desktop and the R/Pi is a perfect choice of hardware to do this, provided it is up to snuff for transcoding the h.264 video stream to AT LEAST 480p.

You will need either a static IP address, a DynamicDNS service, or another way of getting around a changing home WAN IP address (I wrote a script for this purpose-pm me if you want to know more about that). ServeToMe is also accessible from outside your home LAN via the UPnP functions of your router, which I have also tested with my iPad running StreamToMe and can access all my media from home, WITHOUT having to live within the constraints of cloud music storage services. I have an original iPhone 2G 8GB which I use around the house to stream music via StreamToMe (yes it runs on iOS 3.1.3) pulling music from my Mac Mini running 10.6.8/iTunes 11/ServeToMe, and it works wonderfully. ITunes sharing has failed to work on all my devices after MUCH effort, and anything older than iOS 4.x cannot see the iTunes Home Sharing in the current versions. R/Pi headless, home media server and media grabber via SABNZB, Sickbeard and CouchPotato.R/Pi headless, in glovebox of car, stealthed, serving media via ServeToMe over WiFi to iOS and Android devices for different passengers.I too have been seeking an answer to this question.
